Report: Rangers interested in Ryan, contact Anaheim

Glen Sather

Venerable New York Post scribe Larry Brooks reports the Rangers have had preliminary talks with Anaheim about acquiring Bobby Ryan. Brooks notes that the level of interest and ability to make a deal remain unclear, and that it “could be proverbial tire-kicking, could be more.”

That Ryan interests New York isn’t surprising. The Rangers are off to a great start (12-5-3) thanks largely to what head coach John Tortorella calls “a straight-ahead hockey club, a no-nonsense, every-day-I’m-coming-at-you hockey club.” This workmanlike approach has served New York well, but it could use an injection of skill, talent and natural goalscoring ability -- all qualities Ryan brings to the table.

New York also has moveable assets, which makes talks all the more intriguing. GM Glen Sather has only three no-movement/no-trade clauses (Brad Richards, Marian Gaborik, Sean Avery) and a stable of young defensive prospects not named Ryan McDonagh -- who Brooks listed as “off-limits” (along with center Derek Stepan).
