Markov out until end of month at least

Andrei Markov

The Montreal Canadiens will be without defenseman Andrei Markov until at least the end of the month, says Habs coach Jacques Martin.

Martin told reporters today that the team’s top d-man won’t play prior to Montreal’s California road trip that begins Nov. 30 in Anaheim.

Markov’s last game was over a year ago (Nov. 13, 2010) when he tore up his knee against the Carolina Hurricanes.

The 32-year-old has been practicing with the team wearing a non-contact jersey.

“I feel good. It’s fun. Finally, I’m doing something different,” he said Tuesday.

The Habs could sure use Markov soon. Their power play is languishing at 13.9 percent, 23rd in the NHL.

In other Montreal injury news, defensemen Hal Gill (infection) and Jaroslav Spacek (upper-body injury) are day-to-day.

The Canadiens lost 4-3 last night on Long Island with a back end comprised of P.K. Subban, Josh Gorges, Yannick Weber, Raphael Diaz, Alexei Emelin and Frederic St-Denis.

Diaz, Emelin and St-Denis are rookies, so don’t feel bad if you’ve never heard of them.
