Escaping Shana-ban: No supplemental discipline for Wolski, Beauchemin

Kevin Allen of USA Today is reporting that neither New York’s Wojtek Wolski nor Anaheim’s Francois Beauchemin will receive supplemental discipline for separate incidents during Saturday’s play.

In a 5-4 OT loss to Ottawa, Wolski elbowed Sens captain Daniel Alfredsson in the head and was whistled for a two-minute illegal check to the head penalty:

Allen writes that “the league view on the Wolski hit was that Wolski was bracing for impact when Alfredsson skated into him. There have been other incidents like this season that have also not resulted in suspension.”

Later that evening, Beauchemin nailed Nashville’s Mike Fisher during a 3-0 loss to the Predators, and was also whistled for a two-minute illegal check to the head penalty:

In explaining this one, Allen writes “the league’s view was that Beauchemin’s hit was a full body check with incidental head contact.”

The postscripts to these rulings probably won’t focus on the non-suspensions as much as the outcomes of both hits. Alfredsson had to be helped off the ice and will miss tonight’s game against Toronto while Fisher left the game wobbly, didn’t return and missed Nashville’s flight to Chicago for Monday’s contest. Neither club has revealed exactly what injury the player in question suffered, but the speculation always goes straight to concussions.
