The vast majority of hockey fans have at least some soft spot for fighting. Personally, I could enjoy the sport without the occasional installment of fisticuffs, but certainly enjoy a spirited scuffle if it makes sense. (Seeing two enforcers fight out of some grim duty, however, can be a bit tough to watch.)
Yet it would require a pretty disturbing amount of blood lust to accept many of the things that happened between the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders on Friday.
With about 350 penalty minutes and about 14 fights, the violence went from gratuitous to flat-out cringe-inducing. Such thoughts were not lost on Pierre McGuire and Mike Milbury, who discussed the situation during the first intermission of this afternoon’s Game of the Week between the Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings.
