Quebec officials name who will pay the bill for their new NHL-friendly $400M arena: taxpayers

There’s no guarantee that the Quebec Nordiques will be re-born, but Quebec officials announced how the city (and province) would deal with the biggest obstacle in getting another NHL team: having an NHL-ready arena.

Various sources report that Quebec City’s mayor Regis Labeaume and Quebec Premier Jean Charest announced that the planned new $400 million arena will be paid for by a 50-50 split between the city and the province.

In other words, the public will pay for it, even if they said that the Canadian government and private sector “would be welcome investors.” How quaint.

Again, the city isn’t guaranteed an NHL team, although let there be no doubt that getting one is a possibility. Whether it happens via expansion or relocation, Quebec is clamoring for another NHL team.

We’ll keep you updated as this saga goes on and (possibly) builds steam.
