Alex Kovalev expected to miss a week with injured knee

The Ottawa Senators just can’t buy a break, although some of the team’s most cynical fans (and critics) might say they’re better off.

Not long after losing offensively gifted but defensively lacking center Jason Spezza, the Senators will lose one-dimensional forward Alex Kovalev for at least a week with a knee injury, according to the Ottawa Citizen. Not only that, but Mike Fisher is apparently also a little bit banged up after blocking a shot on Saturday, although he’s reportedly likely to appear in Tuesday’s game against the Boston Bruins.

It’s already been a long season for Kovalev, who only has eight goals and 10 assists for 18 points and a -10 rating in 42 games. It’s hard not to wonder if the talented Russian’s days in the NHL are numbered. On the bright side, he earned his 1,000th point this season so it was an impressive run if 2010-11 ends up being his last season in the NHL.
