Riding the Zamboni - Friday, November 12th

Six games, three one-goal wins, two blowouts, and one superstar earning himself a big pile or redemption with his home fans. Just another night in the NHL, eh? Buckle up for your ride on the Zamboni.

Pittsburgh 5 - Tampa Bay 1

Speaking of redemption stories, Marc-Andre Fleury was saluted by the fans after the Pens completed their win over Tampa Bay. Things got hairy early in the third with the Pens already up 2-0 thanks to goals by Pascal Dupuis and Alex Goligoski. Steven Stamkos scored 5:30 into the third to cut the Pens lead to 2-1 but Fleury held strong and the Pens backed him up with insurance goals by Maxime Talbot, Sidney Crosby, and an empty-netter from Deryk Engelland. Fleury finished with 15 saves in the game and he has to be happy to be getting such defensive support from his teammates for once. Meanwhile, the Lightning have lost five of their last six. So much for just handing Guy Boucher the Jack Adams Award.

New Jersey 4 - Edmonton 3 (F/OT)

It looked bad for a while for the Devils. They were down 3-1 at one point to the equally struggling Oilers and on home ice, this would’ve made for a devastating blow. Instead, the Devils whittled away getting goals from Brian Rolston in his first game back after a sports hernia and youngster Mattias Tedenby to get the game to overtime. There it was Ilya Kovalchuk scoring on the power play to earn himself a heaping dose of redemption after his shootout gaffe just two nights previous. One win does not a spark make, but this is the sort of win that can give the team back a little bit of confidence.

Colorado 5 - Columbus 1

Lots of injuries couldn’t even slow down the Avs tonight as they blitzed Jackets goalie Steve Mason for five goals against with Avs power forward David Jones scoring twice and adding an assist. Antoine Vermette had Columbus’ lone goal while Colorado’s Peter Budaj had a strong night stopping 28 shots in the win.

Florida 2 - Minnesota 1

First period goals by Mike Santorelli and Chris Higgins less than a minute apart were enough to get the Panthers the victory over Minnesota tonight. Cal Clutterbuck had the Wild’s lone goal, meanwhile Florida’s Tomas Vokoun stopped just 22 shots in the win. What seemed like a quiet game in the box score was quite loud once it was over when Minnesota’s Brent Burns hit Florida’s Steve Bernier in the face with the butt-end of his stick in a post-game scrum.

Phoenix 5 - Calgary 4

Another rough night for the Flames as they drop a tough one in Phoenix. Vernon Fiddler’s surprising hat trick made the difference for the Coyotes while Ilya Bryzgalov saved 31 shots in the win. While the score shows the game to be close, two of Calgary’s goals came in the final minute of play from Alex Tanguay and Tim Jackman after Fiddler’s empty net, hat trick goal made the score 5-2. It’s not all that often that the empty netter ends up being the game winner, but here we are. Calgary has now lost five of its last six games. At the very least, they’ll always have that “Red Hot” 1989 Stanley Cup winning team to look back on and smile about.

Anaheim 4 - Dallas 2

Anaheim won their sixth straight game and improved their home record to 7-1-1 thanks to the work of their star players. Bobby Ryan scored two goals while Ryan Getzlaf and Saku Koivu each had one. Jonas Hiller stopped 27 shots including a penalty shot by Jamie Benn in the third period. Dallas got goals from Brandon Segal and Brad Richards but to no avail as the Ducks continue to roll. With how good they’ve been at home, don’t expect the Ducks to cool off any time soon. Nine of the next 15 games the Ducks play are at Honda Center. The Ducks better make the most of that as they’ll have a seven game road trip following that stretch.
