Bruins injury updates: Marc Savard resumes skating, Marco Sturm could be back in ‘next few weeks’

The Boston Bruins probably didn’t expect Marc Savard to struggle this much with post-concussion syndrome, but he still faces an extensive journey to return to NHL competition. His progress will have to be measured in baby steps at this point, but at least there seems to be some decent news trickling through about the elite passer.

Joe McDonald of ESPN Boston reports that Savard resumed light skating by himself late last week and it’s apparently going pretty well so far. McDonald notes that there is no time table for his return just yet, though, unfortunately. McDonald shares some sensory details about Savard’s return.

Prior to the team’s practice on Monday at Ristuccia, there were grooves in the freshly made sheet of ice, with a few pucks in the net and around the boards. Those grooves were made, and the pucks shot, by Savard.

His morning twirl was brief and not too strenuous, according to the team source.

At the start of training camp, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said that Savard was having symptoms related to PCS. Coach Claude Julien said last Wednesday that Savard is “behind by at least a month, month and a half, already.”

Even much of the good news involving Savard is a case of “good news, bad news” as you can see there.

While Savard is still quite a few strides short of a full bill of good health, eternally injured German winger Marco Sturm might be moving rapidly toward a rare return to the Bruins lineup, also according to McDonald. The boisterous speedster dealt with a torn MCL/ACL during the Bruins’ playoff series with the Philadelphia Flyers, a knee injury that joins a laundry list of calamities for the likable forward.

Perhaps you should file this under “See it when I believe it,” but Julien claims that Sturm might be back “in the next few weeks.” That, I assume, is a far more favorable projection than Savard’s return, but we’ll keep you updated about Savard’s status as the season moves along.
