Some tough news out of Penguins camp today as the team announced that center Jordan Staal will miss all of training camp recovering from a foot injury suffered during the playoffs. Penguins GM Ray Shero commented on Staal:

“The fact that Jordan came back and played with this injury during the playoffs is a testament to his toughness and competitiveness,” Shero said. “He has experienced some setbacks due to infection, but is now on the road to recovery. We believe he’ll be ready for the start of the regular season in October.”

Staal is set to be the team’s second line center with Evgeni Malkin playing on his wing. Losing Staal for any amount of time should the injury continue to nag him will test the Penguins’ depth mightily. Resting Staal and letting him recover fully will likely help ensure that that won’t become an issue.
