2010 NHL Free Agency: Canucks reportedly the ‘frontrunners’ for Hamhuis right now

With the Penguins and Flyers seemingly out of the Dan Hamhuis sweepstakes, Craig Custance claims that the Vancouver Canucks might be the frontrunner for perhaps the most desirable free agent defenseman remaining.

Vancouver sports a pretty crowded defensive group, cap hit-wise, but GM Mike Gillis is on record about the team’s interest in mixing up a group that broke down last year. From injuries to inconsistency, the team faced a lot of challenges on the blueline and ultimately fell apart in an ugly series against the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Canucks have almost $7 million in cap space right now, so Hamhuis isn’t out of the picture. A panelist on TSN just claimed that Hamhius is looking for a six-year deal worth $5 million per season.

Really, being the “frontrunner” doesn’t matter much since negotiations can change gears any moment. Obviously, we’ll keep you updated as the crazy afternoon moves along.
