We got you caught up to date with other potential signing (or non-signing) news today but here’s a couple other smaller bits of player signing news to get you caught up.

Colorado re-signs two players

The Avalanche are bringing back both backup goaltender Peter Budaj and enforcer David Koci back on one-year deals. While some fans across the Twitter landscape and otherwise question these signings, Adrian Dater jumps in to tell us it’s more about familiarity than anything. Let’s face it, a backup goalie and an enforcer who plays maybe 5-8 minutes a game aren’t worth spending a lot of time breaking down what they mean to the team, but the word being tossed around a lot here to describe these re-signings is “curious” and it fits. Dater’s use of “familiarity” though does make a world of sense.

Bruins re-sign Shawn Thornton

Speaking of “curious” moves, I give to you the Bruins re-signing of Shawn Thornton. While the NESN story doesn’t give any figures, the folks at CapGeek seem to have a bead on things saying he’ll get a two-year deal at just over $800,000 per year, meaning he gets about a $300,000 a year raise. I know that a lot of fans seem to dig Thornton’s style as an enforcer, but was a multi-year deal and a raise really that necessary? Seems a bit silly to me, but then again it’s not my job to deal with knuckleheads like Dan Carcillo either. Now that I put it that way, perhaps Thornton is massively underpaid.
