While a lot of the focus on the Bruins’ injury situation has surrounded the return of Marc Savard to the ice in tomorrow’s game against the Flyers, there’s another Bruins player that the team would like to have back at some point in the playoffs. Defenseman Mark Stuart, who’s been out since April 1st with an injured finger, is getting closer to returning as his condition steadily improves.

He’s started skating again, and according to Joe Hagerty, that was one of the final hurdles in regards to the concerns over his infection. There was thought that the sweat in the wound combined with an elevated heart beat could worsen the condition. Stuart is just happy to be back on the ice.

“Just going out skating, or even [beginning to ride] the bike [again] three days ago, was huge for me. Just to be doing something,” said Stuart. “The worst part was not only not playing, but not being able to work out or sweat was really tough for me. It’s just nice to be out there again, and well work on trying to get back out there and playing.

Finger infections aren’t exactly the sort of injury you hear hockey players having to deal with every day (although a similar issues affected Sheldon Souray this year) so it’s easy to say he just needs to work through the pain and get out on the ice. Yet with bacteria in the blood, which is exactly what this is, you don’t want anyone to take any chances as an infected finger can quickly become life-threatening.
