Flyers’ Laperriere out for remainder of playoffs

To provide a further update to what we reported earlier about Ian Laperriere’s status, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren updated the situation via media conference call.

“I think this is significant. They saw a little spot there initially and I think they were hoping, like we all were, that it would dissipate a little bit, but after seeing the doctor yesterday and validating it again today - it kind of erased any optimism we had. Right now it’s not safe for Ian to play.”

What this means is that after going through a CAT scan, they were able to visibly see the damage done to Laperriere’s brain, even days later. That is ugly. As for what it means for the Flyers...

“They’ll be a point in time, probably in four weeks, where we will give him another CAT scan and see what’s going on. At that time maybe we can re-adjust, but that’s a long ways off. That’s four weeks and probably not doing a whole lot... and what’s it take for him to get back into shape and that type of thing, so its’ pretty safe to say that he’s out indefinitely is probably for the remainder of the season.”

Simply put, this is a simple decision to make for the Flyers, albeit a difficult one. Laperriere’s role on the team as a penalty killer and grinder forward is very important for a team that seems to have found themselves in the playoffs. Losing Laperriere for this amount of time hurts the Flyers immensely, especially if they’re facing off with Washington in the second round of the playoffs.
