Auld to make first start for Rangers against Capitals

Here’s a pretty crazy scenario.

Alex Auld was the Dallas Stars backup all season, until the team traded for Kari Lehtonen. To give an Auld the chance to play elsewhere this season (and free up salary) the Stars waived him, and he was eventually picked up by the New York Rangers on re-entry waivers. Lehtonen got his first start with his new team earlier today against the Pittsburgh Penguins, while Auld will make his first start with the Rangers tonight against the Washington Capitals.

So two goaltenders, one replacing the other on the Dallas Stars, both make debuts in their new home against one of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference. On the same day.

Now it’s not the most unlikely of scenarios to come across, but it’s still fascinating. Let’s just hope that Auld has a better debut than Lehtonen, who allowed six goals to the Penguins earlier this afternoon. Of course, the situations are a bit different -- Auld has been playing all season long, while Lehtonen made his first start in the NHL in nearly a year.

Auld was 9-6-3 with the Stars, posting a 3.00 goals-against average with a .894 save percentage.
