Boston Bruins’ blueline shuffle continues with Seidenberg acquistion

Many hockey fans (myself included) were absolutely stupefied when the Boston Bruins signed Derek Morris for a staggering $3.33 million right in the middle of their Phil Kessel crisis. Well, after today, the Bruins have essentially traded depth, Morris and a second round pick for Dennis Seidenberg.

TSN provides the exact terms of the Seidenberg trade:

“The Florida Panthers have parted ways with Dennis Seidenberg, trading the veteran defenceman to the Boston Bruins. The Bruins also receive defenceman Matthew Bartkowski in exchange for right wingers Craig Weller and Byron Bitz, as well as a second round pick.”

Aside from the increasingly fashionable exchange of a second round draft pick, the other noteworthy player in this move is Byron Bitz. In the grand scheme of things, though, Bitz is just a gigantic but limited player with an awesome last name (I’ve been fond of referring to him as “Ritz Bitz.” ... I’m a large fellow.)

Seidenberg’s scouting report (I love those things) essentially casts Seidenberg as the anti-Morris. Here are some of his “assets”, according to the scouting report:

“Is adept at logging big minutes and is a sound defender. Moves the puck quickly and efficiently out of the defensive zone. Knows when to pinch in from the point and can play the point with the man advantage.”

Yup, sounds like he’s everything Morris is not. What do you think, readers? Is Seidenberg a significant upgrade over Morris?
